ACADEMIC, RESEARCHER, AND ADVOCATE FOR SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE
Known to most as Juwel. Juwel Rana first became interested in social sciences as a teenager in Dinajpur district, the northern part of Bangladesh, early named Varendra Janapad and was particularly interested in social justice for all of the time. He attended the University of Dhaka, highest echelon in Bangladesh, where he received a B.S.S. in 2011 and M.S.S. degree in 2014, and subsequently joined as Lecturer in Sociology at Dhaka International University (DIU), Dhaka, Bangladesh. As of 6 January 2015, he joined as Lecturer in the Department of Social Relations at East West University (EWU), Dhaka, Bangladesh. In January 2016, he joined as an adjunct faculty at the Department of Sociology in the Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University, Dinajpur and worked there until June 2017. Currently, he is an Erasmus Scholar for European Masters in Public Health (Europub+), double degree program, at The University of Sheffield, United Kingdom and EHESP School of Public Health, France. He has founded South Asia Institute for Social Transformation (SAIST) and South Asian Youth Research Institute for Development (SAYRID), with a vision to generate and disseminate scientific knowledge in inequality, environment, health, education and Social Justice for all. SAIST publishes a magazine Verstehen that offers a platform for growing online discussion and networking opportunities for the young scholars of South Asia, spread all over the world. He has also set up an International, peer-reviewed half-yearly research journal (Printed & Online), South Asian Journal of Social Sciences (SAJSS), for promoting South Asian academic or researcher through publishing their scholarly research articles. He is a regular member of the Research Committee 09 Social Transformation and Sociology of Development and RC15 Sociology of Health, International Sociological Association (ISA). Mr. Rana serves as the regional editor of Global Dialogue, a quarterly magazine of the International Sociological Association (ISA). He is also associated with different national and international non-profitable and voluntary organizations which work for ensuring social justice across the world.
